This enchanting island had been a holiday spot for centuries and now with cheap flights to Italy readily available it's more accessible than ever.

Lying to the west of Italy's mainland - visitors arrive by boat from Sorrento and Naples. When you arrive a funicular carries you into the quaint old town.

In the 1950's the island became something of a magnet for the `jetset` - and even now it's a popular destination for celebrities (and for the paparazzi too!), the quaint streets of the town have some very smart boutiques and high end shopping.

Attractions on the island include the famous blue grotto - the interplay of light and water in the caves giving it its stunning colour. A walk to the Arco Naturale - a natural rocky arch - will reward your efforts with stunning views. For amateur historians the Villa Jovis is worth a visit which was the home of roman emperor Tiberius.

At the end of a busy day - relax in one of the many smart bars and cafes - mozzarella is a local favourite served with olive oil, tomatoes and basil to make a insalata caprese. And if you still have a little energy left - there are plenty of clubs on the island - but beware deep pockets are required.
