This famous city is situated at the western entrance of the Straits of Gibraltar. With a history that dates back to the Phoenicians in the 5th century BC, Tangier was ruled by many different nations over the centuries - the French, Spanish and Portuguese have all left their indelible stamp on the culture and language of the city.
Finally independent, it is now making its mark as a popular tourist destination - offering an irresistible combination of great hotels, year-round sun and fine beaches.
This is no ordinary bucket-and-spade resort though and there are many ways to get a glimpse of the fascinating local culture. Take a stroll through the Medina - the ancient Arab heart of the city and take a look around the Socco's - this is the Spanish word for souq or market and if you are up for some haggling you may get a bargain. If not simply sample the atmosphere over a glass of traditional mint tea.
Other must sees include Cape Spartel, the northern most tip of Africa and the caves of Hercules - legend has it that this is where he rested before his 12 great labours.
The city is famous for its bohemian character - over the years it has attracted the attentions of such diverse luminaries as Matisse, Jack Kerouac and the Rolling Stones - and you'll appreciate its lure after you visit.
