Fes is the third largest city in Morocco and is recognised as the spiritual capital of Morocco. It is one of the four `imperial cities' which also includes Meknes, Raba and Marrakech. Fes is famously known for being the world's largest intact medieval city, one that has barely changed through the modern ages but is still most definitely alive.
Fes is becoming an increasingly popular place to holiday as many of the traditional houses are being restored. Temperatures in Fes easily exceed 40ºC before lunch time due to the geographical position of this city. Fes is located between the mountains and so there is very little rain or wind to cool the temperatures down. Visitors often enjoy spending their days at the swimming pool clubs, which there are plenty of. It is also a great place to speak to the Moroccans here as many of them are fluent in other western languages.
There are a generous amount of shops in Fes, especially in the older part of the city where it is hard not to find a shop in these busy streets. Sugar, tins, tea and Coca Cola can be bought from the tiny grocery stores. Alternatively the wider streets house more typical tourist shops. Some of the finest restaurants of Morocco can be found in Fes. In addition, there are food stalls and other simple places to eat that are very popular with visitors to this medieval city.
