Holidays to Puerto Juarez

Unlike many 'Puertos' along the coast, Puerto Juarez is a real, working port and, as such, a real, working port village.

This, to us, is a real breath of fresh air, and is a fascinating choice for those who like the hassle-free living of a modern resort mixed with the authenticity of a real, Mexican village. There are swisher, all-inclusive resorts along the coast, but none with the likeable bustle and honest appeal of Puerto Juarez, just eight kilometres north of Cancun along the mainland road to Punta Sam.

Though its principal raison d'etre is the dock for passenger ferries to Isla Mujeres, the port does have a sprinkling of palapa restaurants - Mexican, informal seafood restaurant-cum-bars (usually excellent!) and souvenir shops catering to visitors catching the half hour ferry to Isla Mujeres with its wonderful dive sites and breezy coast. Puerto Juarez' holiday zone is, however, not on the busy harbour - you'll be glad to hear - but tucked down the coast, complete with stylish hotels, its own range of bars and some colourful market stalls.

Wherever you are in Puerto Juarex, you won't fail to spot its distinctive white tower. At the base of this tower is a convenience store and a restaurant. At the top is an even classier restaurant with, as you can imagine, great views! Some may say this tower is modelled after a mysterious Mayan ruin near the present day Yucatan city of Merida.

Essentially a suburb of lively Cancun, your stay at Puerto Juarez can be as relaxed as you like, or, with Cancun's breathless nightlife, as full on as you can take it!
