Puerto Aventuras is a bright, cleverly designed and upmarket cluster of holiday homes, stylish hotels and calm, shop-lined avenues just ideal for those seeking a relaxing, hassle-free Mexican adventure. At the heart of the Mayan Riviera, Puerto Aventura's marina is a dream - the only one, in fact, along this sublime stretch of the coast. As such it's a busy place, as yachts and cruisers bounce and bob side-by-side in the emerald waters. Puerto Aventuras is also the centre of sport fishing for Mexico's Caribbean coast.

Puerto Aventuras is a quiet alternative to the busier, and perhaps more boisterous Playa del Carmen but, conveniently, Playa's excellent restaurants, lively nightlife and good shops and markets are just a five-minute taxi ride away. Buy your fresh bread from its bakeries, return to your hotel, and it will still be warm and delicious as you pack your picnic for another day at the beach! Activities include golf, tennis, and diving and there are a few small shops selling local crafts, a pharmacy and two small grocery stores.

Fatima Bay, the main beach area, is a gorgeous slope of cool coral sands, where beach bars provide all you need to camp out under a parasol all day. By night, there are good entertainment options offered at the resort's hotels, or you could take a taxi into ever-busy Playa Del Carmen for more Mexican fun than you could shake a burrito at.
