A trim suburb of Playa Del Carmen, Playacar is self-contained enough for you to happily spend a week or two wandering around its tidy streets lined with villas, apartments, occasional restaurants and shops. It's a purpose built community taking full advantage of its glorious position, adjacent to one of the Mayan Riviera's best beaches, and just a hop skip and a jump away from one of its most appealing towns - the fizzing, unashamedly Mexican township of Playa Del Carmen.
There's nightlife galore to jump into here but, if you prefer jumping into the inviting waters of Caribbean, you could enjoy a different cove everyday. The Mayan Riviera features cove after cove of cobalt waters, some with handkerchief-sized pockets of sand, some with warm rocky ledges, perfect for stretching out and warming up your body on.
Warm up your mind by visiting any one of the area's ancient ruins, fascinating old towns (scrubbed up with the addition of sparkling new hotel complexes) and interesting old craft markets. Nearby Tulum's site is perhaps the most attractive - an ancient Mayan settlement perched on a lonely headland overlooking the sea. But the action isn't confined to the landward side. Just offshore, the Great Mayan Reef is the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere.
Highway 307 along the coast in Quintana Roo is the Mayan Riviera's M1. En route you'll enjoy delightful tourist towns and resorts each with good shopping opportunities, excellent seafood restaurants and peaceful vantage points where you can simply stroll along the seafront, and enjoy the silence. Back towards the town, you can walk along the coast for miles. Walk south and your wanders will take you to isolated coves each more secluded the further you stroll. Or you may choose to explore the Mayan ruins tucked away in the resort's shady park, or indulge in a game at Playacar's excellent 18 hole golf course.
