What, exactly, is a Riviera? Probably the original term related to France - that stretch between Cannes and the Italian border. But surely the original charms of that area have been buried somewhat under the weight of expectation, not to mention block after block of identikit hotels.

Welcome to a real Riviera. The stretch from Punta Brava just south of Cancun International Airport to Punta Allen just south of Tulum, is of the most sublime coastal regions in the Caribbean, if not the world. Cove after cove of impossibly deep blue waters bite into this lush coastline, where the rainforest meets the sand while, above the cliffs, ancient ruins, fascinating old towns (scrubbed up with the addition of sparkling new hotel complexes) and modern raods whisk you effortlessly along.

But the action isn't confined to the landward side. Just offshore, the Great Mayan Reef is the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere. Highway 307 along the coast in Quintana Roo is the Mayan Riviera's M1, running from Cancun all the way down to the tiny nationality of Belize. The road is never more than a kilometre from the coast. En route you'll enjoy delightful tourist towns and resorts each with good shopping opportunities, such as Playa Del Carmen's 5th Avenue - always bustling with markets and street entertainment.

But you don't need a town to find shops, the Highway runs alongside out-of-town craft markets, malls and beachwear stalls. At Tulum the remains of a once powerful civilisation, the Maya, can be visited. They command a great, uninterrupted view out to sea, reminding you that, then as now, this beautiful area owes its prosperity to the easy accessibility to the warm, clear waters of the Caribbean.
