Though Varkala's reputation and popularity is increasing, this idyllic spot on the Keralan coastline could surely never be anything other than the tranquil haven it is today.
Golden sands, swaying palm trees and picture-perfect beaches backed in places by breathtaking cliffs are why this tiny village opened its doors to tourism just a few years ago. But that's certainly not the full story: Varkala has always been an important place on the Hindu pilgrimage map, and the reputed medicinal qualities of its mineral water springs made this spot a well-kept secret for generations.
As tourism quietly flourished, so the watersports and Ayurvedic massage centres sprang up. But there's no doubt that Varkala will remain a sleepy, laid-back village resort for at least a long while yet.
