Holidays to Kovalam

Kovalam, at Kerala's southernmost tip, used to be a hippy haven - where doing nothing much was considered a high art form. True, the five star hotels have moved in, and smart city types looking for instant karma are as likely to be seen in the beach bars as kaftan-wearing space cadets but - and this is the important bit - Kovalam's as relaxed, welcoming and spiritually uplifting as ever.

In truth, it would be awfully hard for this place to ever lose it. First there's the beach - a huge expanse of sand meeting the shimmering waters of the Arabian Sea. Then there's the land - a deep green carpet of forest, palm and spice plantations is latticed by snaking waterways. And then there's the facilities - punctuating the natural beauty, you'll find yoga centres, Ayurvedic spas, mosques and temples adding interest and enlightenment.

Ayurvedic Rejuvenation, Yoga and meditation, Herbal body toning massages - all of these wonderful treatments are available from a number of resort hotels and parlours. Try it, we¿re not sure how it works, but it does!

Kovalam is busy, especially in high season, yet it remains a charming place. If you want to escape the crowds, head for the rocky promontory and find a sunny ledge to dive from. Alternatively, hire an elephant for an hour or two's wandering amid coconut groves and spice plantations.

Back in town, browse the shops alongside Lighthouse beach, and prepare for another night spent enjoying great food, good company and fantastic sunsets.
