Capital and chief port of Messinia is the beautiful town of Kalamata. It is dominated by a 13th century castle that looks imposingly down onto the town itself. From the castle you can survey the expanse of sea below with its white, sandy shores. Kalamata has all the modern facilities you could wish for whilst retaining a sleepy, traditionally Greek feel. 


Every summer cultural events like concerts and plays are put on by the Kalamata theatre and are held in the amphitheatre of the castle. In the evening, the town comes alive, especially along the waterfront which is lined with tavernas, seafood restaurants and rotisseries serving local dishes and drinks; fresh fish, roast suckling pig, chicken, sausages, cheese, olives, retsina and ralki. 


Kalamata is a wonderful place to come to enjoy the sun and the beaches whilst experiencing traditional Greek culture in an extremely picturesque and unspoilt town. 


Famous for: 
- The historic church of Agii Apostoli (13th c.), where the Greek
Revolution against the Turks was formally declared on March 23, 1821

- A locally produced sesame-covered sweet called pastelli. 

 
When to go: Summers in Kalamata are long and hot. Spring and autumn are clement and often sunny. Winters are much cooler.
