If you like a touch of history with your holiday, Falmouth is just about perfect. Capital of the Trelawny region, Falmouth used to be Jamaica's busiest port. But we're talking 200 years ago, and now, this delightful resort (named, of course, after Falmouth in Cornwall) is a wonderfully preserved historic core with, at its coast, a strip of very fine beach, great hotels and restaurants and excellent links to Montego Bay nearby.

Everything you could need, then, for an excellent Jamaican holiday combining the best of the old with the smartest of the new. Visit the historic district, between Newton Street and Market Street for a taste of Old Jamaica. Oh, by the way, it's pronounced 'Falmut'.

Don't spend too long on your history lesson, though, you are on holiday after all. Head to the beach, north of here. Trelawny Beach is a wide arc of soft sands, on which you can enjoy watersports and snorkelling, paragliding or kayaking. Then again, lying down and doing nothing at all seems to be very popular around here.

The Albert George Shopping and Historic Centre is as good a diversion from the beach as you're likely to find - a blast of sombre history ( the centre includes the former house of a slave master) and commercial therapy (there's a good range of craft stalls here). The nearby Luminous Lagoon, where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea, is a glowing, phosphorus natural wonder. The natives say it doesn't happen anywhere else in the world. You can choose whether to believe them, but it's still a wonderful sight.
