Throw yourself into the Jamaican way of life and party like you mean it. Sure, you might be coming to this rugged, beautiful island for rest, relaxation and horizontal sun-worship but sooner or later it gets to you.
That Jamaican thing.
The island is never too far away from its reggae rhythms and an infectious, all-welcome, impromptu pool party is just a rum punch away. This is the island where half measures are unheard of. Where sunsets are even more blazingly glorious than you¿d expect, where waters are bluer, watersports are faster and waterfalls are wetter (as you'll see if you dare to navigate the Dunn's River Falls).
Its intoxicating mix of cheeky patois-talking locals, ghetto-blasting stalls and chilled out beach bars will instantly let you know: Jamaica's like nowhere else. Sure, the requisite Caribbean ingredients are here. The beaches are, by and large, beautiful, and the all inclusive hotels and resorts are bristling with facilities, great restaurants and easy-going service. The interior an opulent mix of dense forests and soaring mountains.
Tourism has not tainted this island nation - its big enough, and mature enough to soak up the summer crowds without sacrificing its character. And, in parts, that character can be quite uncompromising - this is a poor country and many of its towns and cities are little more than shanty towns with street children and opportunistic street traders pleading for a dollar or two.
Tourism, however, has been kind to Jamaica and is the island's largest employer - and you're sure of a warm welcome, whichever beach resort you chose. Excursions into the country's kaleidoscopic interior are highly recommended - even escorted daytrips to its vibrant capital, Kingstown (the largest English speaking city south of Miami) , are worth keeping time for if you really want to see the heart of this cultural, captivating island.
