Holidays to Athens

With flights to Athens departing from most areas of the U.K., a weekend city break to the Greek capital invites you to view the remains of the seat of the birthplace of its Ancient classical civilisation. The majestic Parthenon stands resolutely on Acroplis hill as if on its own stage, but beneath its gaze the buzz of everyday life of modern Greece is almost as intriguing. 

From Syntagma square and its curious bobble shoed guards outside the parliamentary building, make your way to the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus from where the path leads directly to the Acropolis. Explore the narrow streets of Anafiotika and wander through the bazaars of Monastiraki. Take a break in the city centre park at or venture up Lykavittos hill by cable car for rewarding views. Further afield a 45 minute metro ride will transport you to the beaches of Volu and Vouliagameli. The pretty town of Nafilo with its ancient forts can be reached by a 21/2 bus ride fom where you can also explore the ancient site at Mycenae. A visit to a lively Taverna is a memorable way to round off the day. 

Hotels in Athens as in most capital cities are better value out of the centre and accommodation close to a the metro station is a good choice.
