Holidays to Benaulim

White powdery sand gently washed by the emerald waters of the Arabian Sea, swaying palms, local fishermen casting their nets' it's a bewitching scene, and one which has made Benaulim so irresistible to those seeking serenity, Goan style. 

Despite its obvious charm, Benaulim, situated on one of South Goa's most attractive stretches of coast, still feels calm, even at weekends, when locals gather on the sands to unwind. 

In Goan mythology, this is the place where the arrow of the warrior saint Parasurama landed when he ordered the sea to recede. Thankfully, his mission was only partly successful as the tide still advances twice a day - which is useful for those offering water sports and dolphin cruises! 

Margao, the provincial capital of South Goa is just 10 kms away from Benaulim, offering a blast of easily accessible city living - with its busy spice markets, silk stalls and good-natured bars and restaurants where, for not much more than the price of the taxi fare there, you can enjoy a fabulous, fiery Goan fish curry, washed down with a cool glass of lassi. Delve further into South Goa and you'll quickly leave the city behind as you travel though a landscape of rich forests, rushing rivers and mountain top shrines. It's all very magical.

The hippies came in the 60s, drawn to the region's easy-going pace of life, its obvious spirituality and, of course, glorious beaches. Goa, today, is still a spiritually fulfilling destination - with its laid-back beach resorts, effortlessly friendly people and fragrant spice stalls.

From trance culture to serene spas, this Indian pleasure zone is all about recharging the spirit and refuelling the senses. Don't come for loud, all-night discos, though - the key to unlock the undoubted allure of Goa is to seek enlightenment through simple pleasures, chilled out beats, wonderful seafood and unforgettable beaches.
