While North Goa's got a reputation for being livelier than the rest of the region, Baga beach is a remarkably tranquil slice of the coast - even in high season when the sands are at their busiest.
Baga beach is a relatively compact curve of sand, bounded between its two more famous cousins, Colva on one side and Calangute on the other. Bathing is safe, as the beach shelves gently into the Arabian Sea. Running along one end of the beach, the clean Baga River offers paddling opportunities for small children not yet brave enough to tackle the foaming waves of the open seas.
Goa's beaches from an almost continuous ribbon of fine, golden sands from Tiracol Beach in the north to Gaijibaga Beach in the south. Broken only by a couple of wide estuaries, and the mighty Mandovi River, these beaches are the lifeblood to the region. To many, Goa is one long beach resort, although the type of beach - and the atmosphere - does change along its length.
Where the Mandovi meets the Indian Ocean, lies Panjim, the breezy state capital. North of here, the beach resorts (such as Baga Beach, Candolim Beach and Calangute) are lively, young and lined with beach-huts hawking cocktails, bodysurfing paraphernalia and pork curries to backpackers and budget travellers.
It's all a million miles away from the hippie heaven that existed along this stretch - and from where the Goan tourist industry grew - in the 60s. Look past the commercialism, though, and the beaches are still as fantastic as they ever were. Wide, shallow bays are lapped by warm waters just perfect for safe swimming.
On shore, don't be surprised to be sharing the sand with a reclining cow or two. South of Panjim, beaches are less hectic, and more traditional. Quality hotels face onto private stretches of sand backed by palm trees and gardens - at Betalbatim, Velsao and Cavelossim the accent is on peaceful days, long sunsets and easy living.
Head further south to Palolem's remote and tranquil stretch of sand and you'll realise why this place was considered so special 40 years ago. It's still here if you're prepared to travel away from the crowds for a day or two.
