An island capital, Banjul is an immediately infectious place with a lively streetlife and honest, working-town vibe. That it's also a welcoming tourist city, without sacrificing much of its authentic African character is both refreshing and unexpected.
A seaport town with an enjoyable promenade and easy access to great beaches, Banjul is located on, and more or less takes over St Mary's Island, an outcrop in the mouth of the Gambia River, just before it washes out into the Atlantic. Founded by the British in 1816, this is the centre of Gambian economic life - but the centre of the country's retail and industry lies just over the water at chaotic Serekunda.
It's at Banjul where you'll find the country's chief markets, its museum and its craft centres selling jewellery, batik and weaving. Its busy harbour, chock full of colourful fishing vessels makes for a pleasant stroll.
The African Heritage museum has a collection of African art, most of which are for sale - don't miss a visit here. Out to the beach, and you quickly leave the city behind. Banjul Beach offers seaside relaxation away from the hustle of the capital. It's is still close enough to the action, should you pine for the throb of a big city (actually, should you pine for the throb of a big city, Banjul isn't the capital for you!).
Entertainment at the coast is mainly hotel-based but you are not far from other resorts along the Gambian coast and there are a few friendly beach bars.
A word about friendliness, too - the Gambian people are amongst the most welcoming you'll find anywhere in Africa - don't feel offended if locals come up to chat, they're genuinely proud of their country and will want you to make the most of your stay here.
Banjul's beachfront is decent enough, with soft sands and swimming pools, lush, well-maintained gardens and ocean or river views. Enjoy a game of beach volleyball, a fishing trip or a good book - and don't forget your binoculars, the birdlife in this corner of Africa is the best you'll see anywhere.
