The smallest country in Africa, Gambia's slice of sunny real estate is like the continent in miniature - lush tropical jungles, hidden villages, silent waterways and, at the coast, the most remarkable white sand beaches. 

All this, and just six hours' flying time away, has made tiny Gambia a reliable African adventure for those seeking a holiday with a touch of the exotic, a little of the unexpected and a lot of that famous African sunshine. 

Gambia's stable, friendly society of just 1.5 million is used to welcoming visitors and, relatively recently, has invested heavily in creating a string of Atlantic-facing beach resorts which cleverly mix comfort and authenticity. 

But, no matter how smart your complex, in The Gambia nature is never far away. The country could be said to be one huge nature reserve, clinging to the banks of the River Gambia. Bird lovers will adore it - the country's colourful winged inhabitants are curious enough to get up close to. Although its other notable wildlife - the crocodiles - are best experienced from a boat ride up river, in the Abuko Nature Reserve. 

With its rich traditions of arts and crafts, and music and dance The Gambia's infectious culture makes for a thrilling African experience - immerse yourself in a local market, or an evening's Gambian entertainment and you'll be grinning from ear to ear. This place really gets to you - be warned, for many tourists, one visit to the Gambia soon becomes a habit. For some, it's the country's easy 'no worries' way of life, and the way it quickly eases you into the rhythm of Africa. 

But, for most, it's The Gambia's pure white sands, its open, friendly welcome and its glorious, never-ending Atlantic sunsets. Nowhere is the heart of Africa so easily accessible.
