You don't have to be a sporty 20-something to enjoy Cabaret's magnificent arc of powder-fine sands. But, if you have the urge to mess about in sun-warmed waters - this, of all the coastal resorts in the Dominican Republic, is the place to head.
While Cabarete is just about as laid back as a Caribbean village can be, the beachside action is ratcheted up a degree or two. Despite the attentions of young backpackers and active couples, the atmosphere is friendly, sociable and quite hip. Maybe it's the glorious surroundings that bring out the sunny disposition in everyone.
The bay's location is exceptional - a wide arc of sand overlooking the wide, blue expanse of the Atlantic is backed by lush palms, winding tracks burrowing into northern Dominican Republic's lush interior, tranquil lagoons and emerald green hills.
An offshore reef at the entrance to the bay makes swimming safer but it's the onshore breeze which makes windsurfing such a sure thing in Cabaret.
Water-sports such as kiteboarding windsurfing and kayaking are phenomenally popular around here, but Cabarete is also the perfect place to just lay back to work on the tan. Inland, mountain-biking, cave exploring, canyoning and simply driving off into the countryside offer simple ways to explore the Dominican Republic's spirited way of life.
