Midway along Dominican Republic's balmy, sun-soaked Atlantic coast, San Juan sits on a spur of land, jutting out into the warm, blue waters.
Just 40 kms from the island's watersports capital, Cabarete and San Juan is Bahia Principe; altogether more peaceful, more authentic and completely captivating - with brightly coloured, traditional Dominican Republic houses lining the town's bustling streets, fishing boats bobbing in the harbour and souvenir stalls stacked high with bargains.
The sensual, syncopated Latin percussion of the Merengue, the nation's favourite musical expression, can be heard bouncing from the stores in the town centre, while, in the bars and restaurants you'll enjoy filling Creole cooking and, perhaps a glass of locally distilled rum.
Shopping along Pueblito Principe's colourful strip of stalls and markets offers your best bet for quality Dominican Republic souvenirs. San Juan's seafront features incredible beaches, with fine sands and, at Playa Grande, fantastic waves creating perfect conditions for the surfers who make their base here every summer.
One of the most spectacular beaches in the island, Playa Grande's kilometre and a half of white sand is perfect for strolls on the beach but young children might find the waves a little too tricky. If so, nearby Diamante and Caleton's calmer waters will be ideal. Golfers claim the course here is the best on the island, too, but watch those inshore breezes if you want to keep your balls under control.
