As an independent nation Cyprus has existed for less than a generation. But its history stretches back much further. Long before the Greeks and the Turks started squabbling over who owned what half of this sun-splashed Mediterranean isle, Romans, Venetians, Genoese and British imperialists all laid claim to this birthplace of Aphrodite, the Goddess of love.
These days, however, if there's any conquering to be done, it's being done by tourists. Since the 1960s the agreeable Cypriot climate and its stunning landscape have combined to attract thousands of trippers every year. An island steeped in myth and legend, history and hospitality, sunshine and romance, there's something about Cyprus that draws visitors to its shores year after year. It's not just the sumptuous sandy shores, the Greek and Roman ruins, or the lovely landscape of cedar forests, citrus groves and rocky peaks. It's all of those and much more. The food, the fun, the feel of the place - all fabulous!
