Holidays to Cayo Coco

A low lying whisper of an island, Cayo Coco is a shimmering expanse of palm groves, lush vegetation and thatched-roofed holiday resorts which makes the island feel more like the Maldives than Latin Cuba. It's certainly a laid-back resort although, as Cuba's fourth largest island, it's larger than you'd think. It even has its own, postage-stamp sized airport. Connected to the mainland over a 17km long 'road across the Atlantic', Cayo Coco is just your typical perfect paradise island - if you're looking for peace, Robinson Crusoe style isolation (with, of course, none of the arduous 'having to catch your own supper' malarkey) A nature reserve rich in wildlife and lush vegetation, Cayo Coco is a protected hinterland of considerable charm. A ten kilometre stretch of fine white sands soften its outline while, twice daily, aquamarine waters wash ashore, calmed by the rich coral reef just out at sea. 

Today, Cayo Coco is not only a holiday lover's dream, but a bird watchers' too - this Cay (the name they give to these tiny archipelagos around here) hosts species such as the mockingbird, pelican, grey heron, and the pink flamingo - with over 30,000 birds, Cayo Coco is home to one of the biggest herds in the world. Its huge coral reef, at over 10km long, adds more colour to the island - and, together with cycling along the lanes - diving is the most popular activity in this otherwise totally laid-back desert island destination.
