What's in a name? At Tossa de Mar, let us assure you, the town is far prettier than its moniker - a one time fishing village, Tossa (The Castle on the Sea) is a charming town, rich in history and overflowing with sights. The municipality can claim to be one of the oldest on the coast - with a history stretching back 1,000 turbulent years. Situated in the heart of the Costa Brava, it's a suitably dramatic fortress - or at least it was: the only invasion it experiences now is the seasonal influx of families keen to enjoy its range of facilties. The fortress can still be explored in the quarter known as the Villa Vella, all thick defensive walls and sturdy towers. The castle, constructed in 1187, is also worth a visit. All package holidays in Tossa De Mar, though, will feature more than a passing glance at the region's excellent coves and beaches - there are seven within a few kilometres from the town. 

There's still a village feel to this town, cloaked in the pine forests and green valleys of the coast - and sprawl has been kept low-key and in keeping with the region's heritage. This is a world away in style and substance from its near-neighbour, lively Lloret de Mar. Cheap holidays in Tossa de Mar offer an altogether more relaxing experience - with none of the late-night lager bars, but all of the facilities you'd expect from a modern resort: great watersports, restaurants and tavernas extending an especially warm welcome to families.
