Stretching from Port Bou in the very north to Barcelona in the south, the Costa Brava is probably Spain's most famous stretch of coastline. Despite being one of the first areas in Catalunya to be developed for tourism, the Costa Brava remains enchantingly beautiful. Described as the 'wild coast' - turquoise blue waters meet rugged pine-clad cliffs; secluded coves nestle between jagged rocks, and gently shelving sands lead down to azure blue seas. There are golden beaches for water sports enthusiasts, ancient towns to explore and some awe-inspiring natural wonders, from the snow-capped summits of the Pyrenees to the untamed Cadiretes Mountains.
Catalunya and the Costa Brava is not only a beautiful region it is also steeped in history, with some of the world's greatest empire's leaving their mark. Since Paleolithic hunters first made their home in the caves of Ulldecona in 550BC, Catalunya has seen the Romans and Moors settle on its shores. It's golden age, in the early Middle ages, finally saw Catalunya receive its own constitution and the start of a long battle to form the unique culture it has today.
