Anyone visiting the Bahamas for the first time will soon realise it is not just one destination. There are twenty-three inhabited islands and thousands of deserted inlets and cays. Some are cosmopolitan, some are americanised and some are uninhabited wildlife sanctuaries that are protected by law. But what the Bahamas islands all have in common is the glorious year round sun and azure seas that surrounded them. And then of course there are the glorious, palm fringed powdery white beaches. And with so many islands there are endless beaches and it would take a life time to enjoy them all.
The more populated islands have a great range bars and restaurants and, naturally, sea food is a speciality. The local people are known the world over for being some of the most welcoming and laid back anywhere - you'll never be short of new found friends to dance till dawn with.
Whatever your troubles, they will float away as soon as you set foot on one of these amazing islands. The Bahamas is a wonderful destination to experience the excitement and warmth of the Caribbean in truly beautiful surroundings.
Famous for:
- The Bahamian festival of Junkanoo - an energetic, colourful parade of brightly costumed people gyrating and dancing to the rhythmic accompaniment of cowbells, drums and whistles.
- Christopher Columbus who made his first landfall in the New World on San Salvador in 1492.
