Holidays to Alvor

The Algarve's resorts all offer great beaches, bright, modern accommodation and excellent nightlife, but few offer the chance to combine a beach resort holiday with a the chance to explore a real, working Portuguese city. Alvor, just 8 kms from vibrant Portimao does just this. This well-desgined seaside suburb of Portimao was once a Moorish fortress, guarding one of the coast's best natural harbours. The village is a real treat - with its brightly coloured fishing vessels bobbing in the sunlit waters. 

Away from the front, the village disappears inland in a succession of tightly woven, cobbled streets and a 16th-century parish church with a fine interior. Alvor beach itself is pure bliss - as you'd expect, but if it gets too busy, just keep walking! There are some lovely golden stretches of sand towards Portimão, especially the cove of Praia dos Três Irmãos with its russet cliffs, which pick up the sunlight and simply glow. Travel a little further out - and you'll reach ever more deserted coves and bays. You'll love the deep saphire of the João de Areus grottoes.

Cheaper copies can be bought in the town's excellent markets and ceramics stores. Nightlife in Alvor features all manner of diversions, from an excellent Casino, to a range of good value restaurants and lively discos. Accommodation in the resort ranges from swish, sea-front spa hotels to basic, comfortable apartments, which means that even those on a restricted budget can enjoy cheap holidays in Alvor. And, of course, saving money on your apartment means that you can splash out and enjoy the town's shops and bars even more.
